AREA OF OPERATION

Area of Activities

The foundation's scope of rural development activities is villages of Kutch district. Reason for choosing Kutch district is Ashapura Group's commercial activities commenced from Kutch district.

It is as a measure of gratitude towards Kutch, the management embarked on fulfilling its social obligations in this area.

Scope of rural development activities which started in 4 most backward and inaccessible villages of Lakhpat Taluka of Kutch district, now covers 84 villages spread over 4 Talukas of Lakhpat, Abdasa, Nakhatrana and Mandvi, which are still dependent on agriculture and animal husbandry as its occupation.

Industrialization has hardly reached here and as such most of the population depend on agriculture and animal husbandry for their livelihood. Agriculture in Kutch is rain-fed. There are absolutely no major rivers flowing in this region.

Entire human, animal and Plant life is therefore dependent on rain-water and how much of it can be put back into the ground or stored by way of Storage Tanks, Check Dams etc. Therefore we at Ashapura Foundation literally HARVEST WATER. Water is the scarcest and precious commodity in Kutch district, (Western most part of India bordering Pakistan) Kutch is surrounded by desert on the North and Arabic Sea on West and South.

Drought and Famines is regular feature of this region. Out of every 3 years, 2 are famine/drought years. Rainfall is scanty and irregular.

The district is spread over 40,000 sq. km. of area and cattle population is more than the human population.

We therefore attempt to "Store" or "Recharge" into the ground, as much rain water as possible.
