Animal Care
Kutch is perhaps the only region where the population of animals and cattle is more than the human beings. This is the region where large number of people depend on agriculture and animal husbandry for their livelihood. The cattle is the main source of income to these people so they treat these animals as their wealth. But the conditions for the cattle in this region is very critical which can be described in brief as follows.
-
Lack of Drinking water
-
Lack of fodder
Every drought year, many animals die for lack of basic necessity of life like fodder and water.
To mitigate these difficulties, Ashapura Foundation carries out following activities.
1. Arrangement for Drinking Water for animals

|

Havado |
Separate Talavs (Storage Tanks) are constructed to provide the drinking water to cattle. Moreover the Havadas are also constructed in the villages which can store some amount of water to be drunk by the cattle. On an average 200 to 300 litres of drinking water is stored in Havada, which enables the cattle to have drinking water at any time in such a dry region. |
Up to December 2007, the below listed Havadas have been made by Ashapura Foundation.

Distribution of Fodder |
Distribution of cattle feed
At the time of scarcity of rain, there always exists the shortage of fodder. In such a situation, the cattle owners migrate from place to place in search of food for their cattle and live wandering life.
|
Under such circumstances, Ashapura Foundation provides fodder to the needy ones regularly. This in turn stops wandering of cattle owners and enable the cattle to have the fodder in the region itself during scarcity days. This improves living condition of cattle owners and prevents cattle death.
Ashapura Foundation took care of cattle in 9 villages of Lakhpat Taluka for the entire period up to next monsoon in droughts during each of the following years.

Development of Grass Plots
Ashapura Foundation develops grass plots and also maintains them. The special care is taken to make sure that a good quality and quantity of grass is grown. Due to this arrangement, the cattle get food locally and they do not have to depend much on the fodder which is to be purchased from the other parts of the state. |
Ashapura Foundation has started Community Grass Development Programme as a pilot project over 100 Acres (40 Hectors) of land covering 2 villages. This will feed 1500 no. of animals. |

3. Animal Vaccination Camp
|
|

Vaccination Camp |
In the inaccessible areas of this region, animal husbandry is carried out by the illiterate people. The people are unaware of the scientific approach to the diseases of animals and ways to protect their animals against deadly diseases. Ashapura Foundation arranges vaccination camps in the interior areas of this region time to time and also aware the owners of cattle about different diseases and provides information regarding vaccines available for the animals. |
